Francis Robicsek, M.D., Ph.D

Dr. Francis Robicsek was born on July 4, 1925 in Miskolc, Hungary. He graduated from Royal Catholic High School, Miskolc, 1943, cum laude. He completed his graduate studies in medicine at the Pazmany Peter University at Budapest where he graduated summa cum laude in 1949. He received his training in surgery at the First University Surgical Clinic and later on at the Postgraduate Surgical Clinic, University of Budapest. He served as Assistant Professor at the Postgraduate Surgical Clinic University of Budapest in charge of the Department of Heart Surgery until 1956. He has resided in Charlotte, North Carolina and practiced medicine there since 1956. At the present time, he is Chairman, Department of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery, Carolinas Medical Center; Medical Director of the Carolinas Heart Institute; and Professor of Surgery, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He is a member of many professional societies including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Vascular Society, etc. He is Past President of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Society. He is an Honorary Member of the German Society of Thoracic Surgery, the Scandinavian Society of Thoracic Surgery, the Surgical Society of Guatemala, and the Surgical Society of Costa Rica, etc. He is Adjunct Professor of Anthropology, University of North Carolina, and Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering, University of North Carolina. He was listed in The Best Doctors in America in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998. Dr. Robicsek has published seven books and written more than 600 papers in medicine, anthropology, and bioengineering. He has presented more than 400 lectures at national and international meetings.
